Celery: A Healthy Vegetable With Great Flavor

What is celery?

Celery is a collective name for roughly three different types of vegetables: celery, leaf celery and celeriac. Celery comes in the form of long, pale green stalks and comes from the celery plant.

What celery tastes like

Celery is an aromatic vegetable. It is widely used as a seasoning in pastas, soups and salads. Especially in Italy, they love it. You can also eat the stalks raw as a snack. Celery stalks are great for juicing and incorporating into smoothies.

The taste of celery is very typical and cannot be compared to any other vegetable. It is deliciously fresh, but at the same time spicy and can even be a little bitter.

Is celery healthy?

Celery is definitely healthy! Celery is one of the vegetables with the most health benefits. It is packed with healthy nutrients, such as vitamin K, vitamin C, potassium, calcium, magnesium and vitamin B6.

You don’t have to chew away a few stalks of celery every day, as you can also squeeze your own juice from it or buy 100% pure celery juice. When drinking celery juice on an empty stomach, the nutrients are maximised and the health benefits will be greatest.

However, it is important to eat organic celery. Conventionally grown celery contains relatively high levels of pesticides.

As we mentioned earlier, celery has many health benefits. We have listed them for you.

Celery is high in vitamin A

Celery is bursting with provitamin A. Our body can convert this substance into vitamin A. This vitamin is good for your skin, for your hair, your eyesight, healthy and strong bones and for healthy body growth.

It detoxifies your body

Celery is alkaline, meaning it has a pH value above 7. Our body has an acid/base imbalance due to a diet often containing too much meat, fats and sugar. The alkalising effect of celery can restore this balance. Celery is the remedy for hangovers or after eating a lot of unhealthy food on holiday or during the holidays.

Celery promotes the release of water by the kidneys. This makes you go to the toilet more often and removes toxins from the body faster. For this reason, celery is known as a detoxifier.

This vegetable lowers your blood pressure

If you have hypertension, celery can help you lower it. Research shows that celery is naturally blood pressure lowering due to its high amount of potassium.

Since hypertension has a negative effect on your heart and blood vessels, it is a good idea to consume some celery daily out of prevention.

Celery has a positive effect on the stomach and intestines
The purifying effect of celery helps keep the intestines healthy. The many insoluble fibres combined with the high water content, ensure healthy digestion. It keeps your gut flora healthy and reduces bloating.

Celery contains many antioxidants

The high amount of antioxidants in celery counteracts inflammation in the body. Indeed, antioxidants fight inflammation. Celery also has an antibacterial effect and therefore helps well against flu and colds. Great for support during sniff-season. 😉

Free radicals are eliminated by the same antioxidants. This helps prevent various chronic diseases that result from damaged cells and tissues.

Celery gives you more energy

Celery is known for its energy-giving properties. Experts claim this is due to the vegetable’s high water content (as high as 95%!). This water hydrates your body and therefore you may feel more energetic after eating celery.
